Drak Yerpa Monastery and Meditation Cave Day Tour takes you to Drak Yerpa located on a hillside in Dagze County is only a short drive to the east of Lhasa, and consists of a monastery and a number of ancient meditation caves that used to house about 300 monks. The history of Drak Yerpa includes many of the great names responsible for the establishment of Buddhism in Tibet. The Emperor Songtsen Gampo, Guru Rinpoche and several of his disciples also meditated here. Although the ancient Kadampa Gompa has been destroyed, the geomantic qualities that made Drak Yerpa a major power place still remain and still attract hermits to its caves.

Itinerary:

Day 01: Lhasa-Drak Yerpa-Lhasa

In the morning we drive about 18 km for the Drak Yerpa Monastery. Driving straight along the Najin Road till the east suburbs of Lhasa and ascending to the pass of Mt. Najin, we could have few minutes stop on the mountain pass to take photos of the mountain peaks with prayer flags, and the farmland below, then continue to drive down along the mountain road. It is really breathtaking experience. Once we get to the small cross, we will see the Drak Yerpa and we can hike up to this holy site. It locates in the spectacular limestone cliffs of the Yerpa Valley, with an altitude of about 4000 meters. In the afternoon we drive back to Lhasa.
